Hold the line

Since I began researching and writing The Twenty Murders, much has changed and
sometimes it has felt like trying to hit a moving target.
During the course of my writing, the Scottish government passed the Gender Recognition
Reform (GRR) bill that would allow any male aged 16 upwards to acquire a female birth
certificate purely on his say-so. Men like ‘Isla Bryson’, the convicted double rapist who was
housed in a women’s prison. Fortunately, because of the threat this posed to women and
children, the grownups in Westminster put a stop to this legislation.
However, hellbent on erasing ‘non men’ and dismantling women’s rights, the ‘Shortbread
Senate’ then implemented the Hate Crime Act which supposedly protects vulnerable groups
from prejudice. All except for women. And then came the Misogyny Bill which will protect
men who believe they are women. If that’s not the very definition of misogyny, then what is?
Although there’s a new face at the top of Scottish government, nothing has changed.
Already, in order to keep a grip of power and antagonise Westminster, there’s talk of
resurrecting the GRR. Perhaps it deflects from the Scottish government’s failure to tackle
issues such as the cost-of-living crisis, health and education. And ferries. Make no mistake,
the SNP care little about the people of Scotland (and even less about 51% of them) and the
Green Party’s focus is on identity politics, not the climate crisis.
While UK political turmoil ensued, the medical world imploded. Leaked files from the World
Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) revealed just how quack ‘trans
affirming’ medicine really is. The files detailed discussions between surgeons and therapists
about carrying out genital surgery on children suffering from multiple personality disorder
when not all the ‘alters’ have the same gender identity. How is that informed consent?
Then came the long-awaited Cass Review which confirmed what campaigners had been
warning of for many years: transgender medicine is based on ideology, not evidence. The
damning report concluded that the NHS should stop giving puberty blockers to children and
rushing them into treatment. With this landmark report from a respected paediatrician, the
true extent of the quackery could no longer be ignored. The Scottish government, despite
the outcry, were slow to ban puberty blockers for children, and the Green Party’s LGBTQ+

group called the Cass Review ‘an internationally discredited murder charter’. So, nothing has
changed in Scotland.
One of my early readers asked if I had some sort of second sight. “No,” I replied, “I just
dramatized what many people have been warning about for years.” People like the ‘sheroes’
who lost their jobs for speaking up about the quackery, or who were dragged through the
courts and who received rape and death threats for stating that biological sex matters.
Perhaps if politicians and healthcare professionals had listened, thousands of children might
have been spared experimental drugs and mutilating surgery.
So the fight is far from over and there is much work to do to protect female-only spaces,
sports, and language. Academia must, in the words of the courageous Jo Phoenix, “hold the
line and allow free and intellectual enquiry”. The Equality Act must be clarified to enshrine
sex-based rights, and the Hate Crime Act repealed to protect freedom of speech and
association. And groomer organisations such as Stonewall, Mermaids and LGBT Youth
Scotland must be booted out of every institution and starved of public funding.
Hold the line!
