I’ve deliberately waited for the dust to settle following the Supreme Court’s ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex. Finally, common sense prevails! But why did it take the highest court in the land to decree what’s so bleeding obvious that it’s at risk of haemorrhaging?
We owe a debt of gratitude to For Women Scotland, and all the other women’s rights campaigners who have fought this lunacy for years, often at great personal and professional cost.
The backlash from the other side has been predictably vitriolic: everything from threats of rape and death, to soiling the female toilets. How ladylike! On the plus side, hopefully their dreadful behaviour will peak more people when they finally see what we’ve been up against.
So what now?
The fight goes on. Our Prime Minister, who once stated that some women have penises, now reluctantly agrees with the judges. Yet we’ve heard no apology from him, nor from the Scottish Government who’ve spent £millions fighting their own citizens in the courts. The judgement has either been met with silence, or with reverse ferreting from ministers who
hope we’ll forget their part in all of this. We won’t—and we have the receipts!
While the law now affirms that sex matters, our public institutions (from the NHS to our schools) are infested with an ideology that insists gender identity trumps biology. We must remove all policies and practices that permit males access to female only spaces, and promote the fiction that people can change sex.
This ruling must be the beginning of a wider reckoning. I hope voters remember this when they go to the polls in England this week, and in Scotland next May.
Rebuilding reality from a decade of denial won’t happen overnight. But it is possible, and for the sake of women, children, gay people, and the truth—we must try.
