Book bans and other bully tactics

Burning book

When Magi Gibson broke the news that Literary Alliance Scotland (LAS) had issued guidance to bookstores not to sell books written by gender-critical writers or give the authors public platforms, there was outrage. But not surprise.

Book banning is on the increase across the Western world and, in the US, books such as Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta have been removed from shelves in case — God forbid — they cause offence. In the UK, books challenging transgender ideology are being censored by the ‘Woke Brigade’.

So, it was really no surprise when Scotland’s most powerful literary body stated that “Terfs” — trans-exclusionary radical feminists, a derogatory term for women considered hostile to trans people — were joining forces with “fascists”. The irony, of course, is that it was the Third Reich that burned books opposed to Nazism. Perhaps the people at LAS need a history lesson.

Such tactics are an attempt to silence people who have concerns about trans ideology and its effects on women’s sex-based rights and the harm it’s doing to children. We’re told that there must be “no debate” and to “be kind”.

Fortunately, thanks to platforms such as Amazon, independent authors like me have other channels through which to reach readers. Stating that biology is real and trans women are men would never get through traditional publishing’s ideological filter. That’s why I will trust the open market and the good sense of readers to decide what they consume, and not the wokerati gatekeepers and their ‘sensitivity’ readers.

The book is my two-fingered salute to Literary Alliance Scotland and all the other organisations that try to silence us. If you’d like to offer them your own salute, go here: The Twenty Murders.

Best wishes,

Drew.
